Maguindanao Massacre- Proof of clamped press freedom in the Philippines

I'd like to convey my respects to the brave men and women from the media- who has to sadly lose their lives in seek of truth in a political turmoil that has blown out of proportions. The 30 who were not only killed but butchered on a hillside road in Ampatuan, Maguindanao is another eye opener of the worsening situtation here in the Philippines- Jesus Christ we have capped off Iraq and earned the reputation as the most dangerous country on earth for journalists!

For the nth time, media practioners should not be entwined with agendas and must not be harmed for they are the "chroniclers". A hapless event such as this must not go about off the hook because it clearly defines that the country (as with the past killings) is now run with powerful hoodlums in robes; whom will never stop silencing media critics, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT...

This blow to Press Freedom in the country brings the tally to 134 deaths of media men murdered since the tug of war for democracy in 1986 with a lot of cases still unsolved with deaths blamed on political warlords who control the police and the justice arm within their realms- all hell bent to preserve their seats and are useful for political patrons as they bring in "the votes" for political parties. In the Arroyo administration alone, the number is already 74 and rising...?

When news broke out of the massacre- the whole world was virtually shocked and a lot of protests and condemnations issued, candles lit and protest rallies staged in honor of the lives lost in what's been dubbed as the worst attack in the world against media practitioners.

Unprecedented as it may seem, this reputation is a stern reflection that needs immediate action not only for the ones in power but for everyone... unless of course everyone is contented to live with shame...

More than just fireflies- Synthpop Owl City

Figured to share my latest eavesdrop in the music scene recently- Fireflies from American synthpop- group Owl City. Just saw their video on Myx Philippines hitcharts and saw myself mesmerized by the tune. Got a grip with the group's debut album Ocean Eyes (with Fireflies boarding the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 # 1 singles) and some of the hot finds with lyrical beats includes: "Hot air Balloon," "Cave in" and another personal favorite: "The technicolor Phase".

Owl City with front man Adam Young really bring out a taste of influences, that i can make out a pinch of euro-electronic music, a dash of new wave, alternative and attacking disco in their beats- overall making their touch of sound clinging to the ears.

Lending a hand for typhoon Ondoy victims and immigration concerns

Here's one good news for immigrants or for Canadian citizens who are processing to have their loved ones from the Philippines migrated to Canada but are greatly hindered by the current mishap. While rummaging around for some immigration sites, I found a newspost that the Government of Canada will help out Typhoon Ondoy (Intl name Ketsana) victims thru special prioritization with their immigration needs to Canada.

In lieu of the Super typhoon's disastrous wake in the Philippines- most especially Luzon and Metropolitan Manila, the Canadian government is quickly setting up measures for Canadians and permanent residents to be reunited with their loved ones here in the Philippines by extending a welcome to those who wish to come to Canada.

Now Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) visa office in the country will respond on a priority basis for disaster victims. This will apply to new and existing applications from Canadian citizens, Permanent residents and Protected persons who have close family members in the Philippines. Applicants must identify themselves as being directly and significantly affected by the disaster and notify CIC. Applicants for Temporary residence who are also affected by the disaster (provided they can identify themselves) will also be given priority processing.

On the other hand, I visited a couple of immigration consultant websites for a couple of days now in order to acquaint myself with migration to Canada concerns and I found this website- Better Life Immigration Consultants Inc. really very helpful.

March 6, 2009- Another dissident of Filipino nationalism in music passed away. I was saddened by the fact that one of my idols will go down the pit; but at the same time I am grateful that all his efforts in his call for unity and national pride through music are now widely recognized by Filipinos the world over.

More popularly known with names like: “FrancisM,” “Master Rapper” and as “The man from Manila” Francis revolutionized the merging of rap music and pinoy rock and produced a new genre in music appealing to everyone’s taste. Rich, poor, young and old alike were delighted with Francis’ mix of music. His stuff also brought in a new awakening for the youth on the roles they’ll have to play to make society whole.

Some of his songs (to name a few) were: Mga Kababayan, Man from Manila, Kabataan para sa kinabukasan, Ito ang gusto ko, Nilamon ng sistema, Mga praning, Meron akong ano, 1800-96, 3 stars and a sun, Baw-waw, to the ever popular Kaleidoscope. Francis M dominated the airwaves and earned the respect of artists and musicians and bagged the title as the Philippines’ Master Rapper. He also lent support to the establishment of new artists in both rap and pinoy rock and has since collaborated with fellow artists such Eraserheads etc. to raise the bar of OPM.

Several prestigious honors were given to him which included being cited as the King of Philippine rap and he was featured in international hip hop publications such as the All Music Guide to Hip-Hop: The Definitive Guide to Rap and Hip-Hop published back in 2003 by Backbeat Books, and making it to the May 2004 issue of The Source a U.S. based publication.

Among the awards given to him was the 2005 Pioneer Hall of Fame Award by Empire Entertainment at the 1st Annual Philippine Hip-hop Music Awards, the MTV Pilipinas Video Music Awards: Generations Award in 2006 in recognition of his career that has spanned decades and broken boundaries and for his music which continues to inspire generations of artists and music fans from the Philippines and abroad.

Above all this, he was given the ultimate award after his death though the efforts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts; He was given the Presidential Medal of Merit by the President of the Republic of the Philippines and cited “for his musical and artistic brilliance, his deep faith in the Filipino and his sense of national pride that continue to inspire us.”

I’ll say my salute and goodbye to you idol and couple it up with a grin, knowing that you’ll live forever with us through your music…

The mystery of the stolen Tarsier and the Impostor-winner

Here's one story which i hope will bring a heads up among the organizers of the recently concluded Company Logo and Brand Icon contest held in Cagayan De Oro City- which I have known to be Shie Corporation, to probe deeper and review the wining piece Tarsier logo.

You've awarded the prize to an impostor and not the real artist who dedicated time and passion just to finish that masterpiece! I'm sure you're all serious professionals who will never tolerate "infringement" and thievery to stain your prestigious event.

An artist friend and colleague Darlene Sanguenza who frequently makes logos and illustrations on her free-time and posts them for sale at picture website www.istockphoto.com received shocking news that one of her piece was entered into the contest without her consent and much worse, under another person's name!

As news of her piece winning one of the event's categories broke out and the P40,000 php prize that went into the hands of the "supposed" winner, all she could do is sit by a corner and grit her teeth in disbelief with the unfortunate event that went her way.

Abruptly after thinking things over, she got hold of the impostor's contact details and tried the subtle ways to remedy the problem (even bargaining with cash) but seems like this guy's stone deaf and stayed tough despite her pleas for no formal complaint has been filed yet, and im sure no one from the event has known about this person's activity until now.

What Darlene wants is to get back her piece of artwork, get the proper acknowledgment and the appropriate punishment for the impostor who maybe by now is laughing behind your backs for his ill gotten luck!

Writing Exercise: My imaginary take on the 2010 Philippine presidential race speech

The Philippine election season is nearing. Trapos (traditional politicians) will once again be in the spotlight. To be expected will be the mudslinging, character assassinations and dirty politics that follow the perverted golden rule – He who has the gold (and the guns, and goons) rules!

Enough of that! The Filipinos deserve better. In less than 400 words, write a speech announcing your own candidacy for the country’s highest post on a platform of ‘change’. Be convincing and inspirational. In short, do an Obama.

Here's the shot on my part:

The country’s boon or bane lies in your hand

Change… One word that’s abrupt, clear, yet so hard to achieve. I’m sure most of you gathered here today will agree that it is what the country needs and what better time to realize it than now!

Let me remind you that with your hand, you were given the power to direct the course of our nation- a right that’s clearly been taken for granted, maligned with apathy, greed and power today. Remember, it took decades of bloodshed and burden on our forefathers so we can enjoy what we have now. Remember, all the hardships and lives lost in the “hand me downs” of corrupt ruling- where poverty is the pestilence and money is reeled in as the cure. If you’ve sold your vote, then it’s as good as you’ve sold yourself, your children and their coming generations to the yoke.

Haven’t we learned from the pages of our nation’s history? How many more EDSA’s we’ll have to go through in order for us to see the adverse effects of our dirty politics and those deceitful in power. Given the current predicament of our country, it is not at all a reason to accept money in exchange for your “little” vote. Sure, you’ll get a fill for your empty stomach, but what is lurking behind the intention to buy your vote? ... Too hungry to even ask why?

Remember that when a corrupt mind is at work, what millions he lost now to buy your vote, he will simply regain and multiply once he’s at the seat of power!
Like a crab nibbling on the fat of the land, the more ruthless he will become with every bite, to get more from you.

I will not say more of the past administrations; you already know who’s who so I leave it up to you to do the accounting.

Open your eyes to your Television… Hear the growing number… wanton cries of the hungry and the oppressed…can these things be measured through the seam of a 1 Piso coin?

I will not promise and I cannot promise you anything, but in the premise of change I’ve climbed up on this podium to speak my mind. I come to you now not only as a candidate but also a friend who’s willing to walk with you in the path and heave my contributions to end our dire… Friends, good afternoon.

Writing Exercise- Strictly Dialogue

This dialogue exercise evolved from a previous one by Luida. It involves writing something that is made up ENTIRELY OF DIALOGUE, but in short story form (NOT MORE than 350 words). That means, you absolutely CANNOT adapt the format of a play (e.g. JUAN: Good morning...). Also, you absolutely CANNOT use speech modifiers (e.g. ...said Juan, Juan said...).

Your piece should be made up entirely of sentences in quotation marks. And your piece must reveal something about the characters, the setting and the conflict/plot only through dialogue. A tip: One way to distinguish each character is to make them sound unique in their lines of dialogue, that way your reader won’t be confused who’s saying what.

Below is my piece, about soldiers trapped in a war.

Defeat and Malaria
(341 words)

“Get up soldier, for Christ’s sake, gather your remaining strengths and belt the enemy until the last round of your ammos!”

“I’d surely fight any day with you sarge, but this damn fever’s creeping in my gut. I’m getting weak with every passing minute, here.. aghh… Do you see my fuckin’ hands? God I’m too damn weak to even raise my rifle… slim chance support will get here. It’s all hopeless sarge, better to be holed up in this damn trench than be butchered above.”

“Do you hear yourself saying that soldier? I can shoot you here right now for uttering that… You used to be a ruthless soldier George, who’ll never think twice to fuck up fear into the enemy’s gut…. think soldier, how many battles we’ve won for home, sure as hell I am not gonna go down here without a fight!... Sam... Go up there and man the machine gun!, Damn mortar rounds are now dropping and the skinnies are inching us by the left flank…Don’t just stand there, maybe this’ll make you… I am not gonna think twice to shoot soldier, so do as you’re ordered!”

“Sarge… Aghh… Sergeant Buck! We’re all gonna die here, I’m telling ya…fighting this stupid war that’s not even ours to fight... we’ve been herded to the slaughter.”

“Get a hold of yourself soldier and fight, support’s gonna be here any minute now so we’ll have to hang on tight.”

“Really sorry sir, but ill just be here and wait for my time as with the others…We’re a brigade when we came here…now we’re reduced to a handful…The enemy was not even upon us then… Aghhh…stupid fever’s eating us one by one…”

“Goddamit soldier, don’t make me shoot you! Do as I say or ill have your head on a platter!”

“This is madness sarge…might as well shoot you to get through your fuckin’ brick head…give me a reason to shoot you… I just want to die in peace, can’t you see that? now go and leave me here to die... please…”

Writing Exercise- Personality sketch in 200 words

Imagine a life cut short into 750-1500 words. This is a writing technique called the personality sketch, which is commonly used for feature writing in paperbacks but has gained popularity in more mainstream media such as newspapers, magazines, periodicals, etc. Here’s an example of a special section published in the New York Times featuring the lives of people who died during the September 11 terrorist attack.

Choose a person that you know (or create one using your imagination) and write a glimpse of his or her life, personality, idiosyncrasies, etc. Personality sketches usually use anecdotes, direct quotations, physical description, etc., but for the purpose of this writing activity, we can be more “creative” or “imaginative.” Write as you please, and introduce us to that person in no less than 200 words. :P

Below is my piece about a local musician's alterno life.


Julian Sev

Julian was a musician by the core, living and struggling in daylight at a local fast food chain and traversing the now diminishing city bars at night.

For years the downside of the local music industry has gotten into his thoughts and that earning a lump sum from it is always impossible. Sometimes he earns and sometimes he won’t, still he shrugs off that it’s another day to live by.

A musician’s life here in Cebu is uncertain, that he knows now, for no matter how hard he tries and just how focused he is, it’s always a struggle. The next best thing he thought his band could do is to move to Manila and gamble their chances for a break there.

“He’s always spending his time with his band after work and come home drunk on late nights. He just doesn’t have time for us anymore; I think he already has forgotten his duties with our children! I heard he has a relationship with some woman he met after a gig and that he’s now into drugs. That I don’t know if I’ll believe or not. It’s his stupid belief that someday he’s music will get him and his band far, but the way I see it all their efforts are in vain. It may even be a miracle if we’ll have a decent meal tonight.” His wife Sheree sobs.

Before the band, Julian Sev in his mid- 20’s and a father of 2 great kids, used to be just a reminiscent young man, an engineer by profession and an idealistic family man who always maintain a balance between his hectic schedule of work and quality time. His life made a 360 degree turn when he started a band along with Ernest and Neil. They took on the local music scene thinking that they’ll get somewhere…

How to be invisible online? Get a Globe Prepaid Visibility Kit!

I was kind of excited when I got that 2,500K visibility prepaid kit from globe as I thought it was true to its word and so I opted for one over a regular line figuring it will end my woes for paying monthly bills because I couldn’t find the time.

Prior to this, I got a call from a client who wants me to write for him online during my spare night time hours. Figured I’d just decline for the reason that I don’t have internet connection at home but the client (bless him) helped me by paying for the connection set up.

I even endorsed to him that I’ve selected the globe prepaid kit for the reason that it has the fastest connection (promising 1.8 mbps) and because it was prepaid, it was the most convenient for me.

All’s well that ends well- or so I thought. I got my butt down to the bank to get the money from the client and proceeded right away to the service center and bought the kit. Installation was smooth though in my laptop and encountered a problem with my PC ,but I sorted it out after a razzle.

Then after the process, the dreaded signal came in which was Low service (I think) then GPRS. I don’t know if this is great but it was a snail paced connection completely the opposite of what was promised.

Talk about installation problems, their national customer service hotline by the way did not help me either. I called in at almost midnight and was picked up by a staff and was asked a couple of questions.

I was guided on the installation process and to figure out where did I went wrong and then abruptly my call was cut! I called a couple more times with different personnel taking my calls but the same thing happened. My calls were answered courteously though, but why was it suddenly cut off? I figured to quit calling and decided to figure out the problem on my own in the morning.

Damn’ I’ve been a victim of marketing! Eventually, I’d have to go every now and then to the corner store to load my kit, much to the seller’s surprise as I emptied her load as well. On the bright side though, I helped out increase the load seller’s earnings and I got to work wherever I want but still the connection remains numb at 5 pesos per 15 minutes.

SLOW-slow- slow. I think it took me hours to download and watch the videos that were sent by the client for me to view and be acquainted with and it was a hassle on my part as well as I’d have to research for more sources online to write his articles and it ate up my day!

Regrets aside, I may have to check up my PC for upgrades or anything that can help ease my problem out on the sidelines, but if given the choice, I would've returned this kit and have a cup of coffee instead! I really can't live with this one right now...

Latest update though on the product- If I'm not mistaken Globe has re-branded and added eye-candies including adverts to the kit and now names it "Tattoo Prepaid Kit" sell it at the low price range of Php 1, 800! Tsk tsk... I'll lend my advice to you in 2 words lest you experience what i've had with the kit....BETTER BEWARE...

4 Ques when buying a used car

The Clandestine - (Writing Exercise: Truth)

Supposing a drunk sits next to you in a bar, thinks you are his or her close friend and starts confessing “the truth.” Write about what “the truth” is in at least 200 words.

Capping my Friday night off the counter, downing 3 cold bottles of beer, I decided this is just one of those nights.

The dimly lit tavern, eyes blinking to the sound of blunt sonatas disturbed once in a while by the laughter of eager individuals relieving their troubles away with restless company.

Drinking my second bottle, I turned around to see who among the populace am I sitting with- but all I can see are silhouettes illuminated by the pale light.

Leaning over to reach for my wallet to pay the sarcastic new bartender who’s constantly eyeing me as if I will scram the minute I’ll stand.

Just then a hand patted mine. I looked up to see a stranger, who’s seemed to have gotten loaded somewhere, looking like an executive but smelling puke and with the look from his sleeves, obviously went through a beating.

Not to be rude and the affable person that I am, I begged pardon and asked who he is and motioned him to take a seat. Maybe I’ve known him from somewhere but I just couldn’t remember…with a rolling gait, he sat down.

He said in a freaky voice…"I am Randy (Hik) and you are Albert (Hik)… the awesome duo who always owns the night!” No I retorted, I’m Jovir and I don’t know you bai…you might have mistaken me for somebody else… He just smiled and pressed a finger in a hush and with a husky voice this time, spoke up “Bartender…bai, I’d like two more bottles of Red Horse kanang bugnaw kaayo” he calls him.

Turning freaky again, “Not another word from you, but did you remember our night out with Frank and Colleen? Jeez, I just don’t know how to say to her face that I'm gay! I mean just being there with the two of them, I just can’t bear looking at frank; my, the look of those muscles took me away for good. I just don’t know how to say this straight to Colleen that I just don’t love her; how with her every caress I long for Frank’s instead. This is what keeps bugging me; maybe you can help me out.

Noticing the situation and realizing evil fun with free beers. I just patted him and quipped “Ow Randy sometimes it’s just easier to let go and tell the truth. After all, it’s your life and your happiness that’s at stake here, better let it go!” all the while motioning him to go on.

“(Hik) You know what bert, I have sinned against my wife big time and I just couldn’t bear the truth of her reaction that her perfect husband is not all whom she thinks! You know what, me and Frank made it out tonight in his car. I had the time of my life when that pun of his made it through, how big as well, felt like my rear’s gonna explode and it’s still aching until now! I know you’ll drool when you’ll see it, but I’m certainly not sharing it with you!”

Nodding my head in sheer amusement with the things I heard, all the while gulping another bottle given by the bartender. I figured not to go on with the conversation so I’ll never hear more of his silly revelations but no, for he uttered further.

“How about we go to the restrooms (Hik) and I’ll let you feel the hole he’s made, I'm sure you’ll love it”

That’s it I’ve had enough…

Writing Exercise: Creative Description (Lechon Cebu!)

Figured to share with you a recent exercise we've had in the writer pool- that's all about creative description. We were given the task to talk about our favorite dish and describe as to why we like it without using adjectives traditionally associated with food. e.g: mouth watering, luscious etc.

The challenge was to come up with a creative way of describing food in 300 words minimum with a 1 hour window. Below is what i did for my part.

Lechon Cebu. I like it because of its meticulous preparation; which is set far apart from the traditional Spanish, Cantonese, and ordinary Filipino recipes.

The mixture of herbs and spices truly come alive the moment a Lechon Cebu is hauled from crimson burning charcoals cooked to perfection under bamboo crisscrosses, served with coconut vinegar, soy sauce and laden with blazing- hot Labuyo chillis.

The fat brown goodness holding an apple in its mouth, all crouched in a wooden tray coupled with its pungent yet pleasant whiff always never fail to lure whenever I’m in functions or in celebrations.

So enticing that it makes me automatically wanting to grab a plate and take a piece of it even in a boodle fight!

With every begotten slice- which in my case, comprise a large portion of the ever crusty skin near the mid section all the way to ribs, the sight of the brittle brown crust, syrupy and fair white meat underneath gives a flare to my eyes and rumble to my belly, giving my senses the stern announcement that another good thing (let alone the health complications and conscience breaking news which will soon follow if I ate too much) is rounding up the corner and coming their way.

The moment I take a bite, the burst of zest coming from the mixture of essences off the herbs and spices- which has now seeped through the meat after the long and rigorous cooking process truly lingers around my tongue and makes me want to take some more.

Such is the effect of Lechon Cebu for me that it has become quite my fancy even in hangouts with friends.

Conversations with Lechon Cebu and bottles of beer on the side, marks reward for camaraderie and pleasantries. With every bite and every sip, a companion for a good tete-a-tete among peers whenever, wherever.

The Day before Yesterday (Global warming)

In the writer's pool we're given out another exercise this time in the field of poetry. Below is my expression on my fears of the adverse effects of global warming. Cheers.


It was inevitable. Armageddon has already left his pedestal and is now on his way. Whilst I see the large clouds now converging into a massive funnel of destruction magnified ten fold the damage and speed, I know he’s near and no one knows it but me.

The wise of long ago gave out the warning; they’ve made out the signs. But still the world will not listen and people continued their resilient ways.

From every man made contraption, the dissipate was abruptly given back to Gaia. In her immortality and mighty splendor, she succumbed to her failing health and is now giving us back what we deserved- her anger and punishment.

I watched, a hermit trapped behind the iron curtain of this god forsaken cave while the rest of the world lay sleeping without the knowledge of tonight’s looming catastrophe.

I’ve traveled the world and raised my voice to the busy multitude but everyone it seems, is just too engrossed to listen.

Then as I’ve fallen asleep sitting on this chair, the vision of tonight’s ordeal- blurry at first but suddenly became vivid with death as scenes of Oceans and rivers rising with people crushed after every passing wave, icy rain and colossal cyclones blasting across the now frozen lands.

All these ended with complete silence and darkness as black clouds blot out the sun…

I screamed upon seeing the sight but it seems I can’t hear my voice, I feel the pain and the loss but then I turned to look behind me after hearing a scream behind my ear that sounds too familiar to ignore. “Mata na oi,udto na!”

Whew, thank goodness its ma! Hmm, weird dream… Was it a scene from the movie The day after tomorrow? Looks kinda’ but I don’t think so... Not really.

Writing exercise: Writing in Persona

In our recently concluded writing exercise for the writer pool, we were asked to put ourselves in the persona of either a Deaf, Mute, Deaf-mute, Cripple or Blind person. We were then asked to write a poem or prose about a great experience in our lives and how we went through that experience under the disability we've chosen, at 200 words minimum.

Feeling the jabbing pain and the sight of my blood, brushing aside teardrops of anguish, shouts of agony, savoring the irony that you have given me.

This wall has always been my comfort and my refuge after what you have done to me, yet I cannot raise my voice and I cannot hear what you say, all that I can give is my smile, shed a tear, or in mere action I can only express what I feel, abiding with innocence to what is happening around me. When my days seemed so long with you… Inside I’m wishing it will always be this way.

I remembered that this wall laid witness to our bitter sweet memories together, the fun times we’ve had in the past along with our friends

We ran together, we’ve fallen, we’ve laughed. You heard my first laugh here or so it seemed to you; but to me it was only grunts and a pinch in my chest… a renewed feeling because I was happy.

Then that fateful day did came, seeing you play with our friends, I sat down behind this wall taking a peek every now and then to see your smile. All for me has changed; seeing everyone’s faces and laughter. I can make out reading your lips that you were mocking, strange… I could make out that everyone was mocking me and laughing with content.

Slowly I turned and ran the other way to hide by the comforts of my room vowing to never see you again.

Yet you followed. Teary eyed, you grabbed my hand and eased me down to talk, but all was lost for me that day and it seems it will always be.

Inside I felt helpless with treason and pity with which I was borne unto this world, lesser the boy I wished that I could be.

When all you thought that your mere words cannot work out, you showed me a heart sign and went your way…

I cuddled in my bed the whole time; everyone was bewildered by my strange actions.
I tried to sleep but thinking about the wall, sneaked out, surprised to see the sight.

You’ve left your wooden horse for me with ribbons and all, which I remembered was your most prized possession and beside it a note that you wrote. A Strange token. I opened my mouth to utter the words that are in my heart, but only oblivious silence can I hear... I will remember this night. I will never forget you...

Writing Exercise 33: The Alternate Ending

In our last writing exercise, we were given the time to produce our very own alternate ending to Neil Gaiman's Babycakes in 150 words minimum.

A few years back all the animals went away.

We woke up one morning, and they just weren't there anymore. They didn't even leave us a note, or say good-bye. We never figured out quite where they'd gone.

We missed them.

Some of us thought that the world had ended, but it hadn't. There just weren't any more animals. No cats or rabbits, no dogs or whales, no fish in the seas, no birds in the skies.

We were all alone.

We didn't know what to do.

We wandered around lost, for a time, and then someone pointed out that just because we didn't have any animals anymore, that was no reason to change our lives. No reason to change our diets or to cease testing products that might cause us harm.

After all, there were still babies.

Babies can't talk. They can hardly move. A baby is not a rational thinking creature.

We made babies.

And we used them.

Some of them we ate. Baby flesh is tender and succulent.

We flayed their skin and decorated ourselves in it. Baby leather is soft and comfortable.

Some of them we tested.

We taped open their eyes, dripped detergents and shampoos in, a drop at a time.

We scarred them and scalded them. We burnt them. We clamped them and planted electrodes in their brains. We grafted, and we froze, and we irradiated.

The babies breathed our smoke, and the babies' veins flowed with our medicines and drugs, until they stopped breathing or until their blood ceased to flow.

It was hard, of course, but it was necessary.

No one could deny that.

With the animals gone, what else could we do?

Some people complained, of course. But then, they always do.

And everything went back to normal.

In time, this cannibalistic tradition, a by- product of a chaotic mind engulfed and trapped in the obsession for the rival of homo-sapiens' domination; flourished without inquiry.

As if given the power to rule over the Supreme Being’s enigmatic creations, the consumption was with cult following.

It has never come to pass, as in a conspiracy; everyone was destined to follow.

Then that fateful day did came. For in a turmoil of emotion, a youth that was tucked safely away and was forced to slumber under the bowels of our forsaken civilization, stood up.

No more did he say.

At the gathering for the fools feast, to the elders, he did point and raised the QUESTION.

In the shadows of murmurs, praises and protest, he pointed the inevitable.

And in the eyes of the gathering, at the swift hack of the executioner’s blade he was slain.

Sparkling and dripping in filth, his blood reflects an uprising against a rubbish tradition.

I was a part of that unruly crowd that night and I too felt ashamed of what i have become,

I QUESTIONED myself for every drop of innocent blood spilled...

Many years has passed since the last gathering, and everyone lived in peace; everyone figured it would end.

Then as in a swift awakening, the grey clouds of yesterday slowly melted away;

For now, our most shrewd learned to make animals out of babies...

Imogen Heap: Warp your way to electric dreams

Then I was 3 years too late…

I was never into ambient and electronica that much, until a friend of mine- Isabelle, whose very much into this contraption, introduced to me a couple of Imogen and Frou frou’s treat for the hearing. I on the other hand, got a bit reluctant at first to hear but eventually got the guts and curiosity to try out a few songs off from her 2004-05 Speak for yourself album and boom! The headphones never wore off since then- to the point that even at home I’ve gotten the habit of putting myself to bed with a cue of her songs playing.

With power tracks like: “Headlock”, “Goodnight and go”, “Have you got it in you”, “Hide and seek”- a strange concoction of musicality, “Clear the area” – my personal favorite along with “The walk”

I eventually entered her powerhouse and asked for more of her hits from everyone who has a collection of her songs, some of which led me to her now- defunct band Frou frou hits (My favorites include: “Maddening shroud”, “Must be dreaming”, “Psychobabble”, and “Shh” and an array of her other offerings.

Perhaps, in this day and age this artist from the UK and her music rocks! Imogen is a must tripper as it gives the ears something new and nostalgic, away from the clutches of guitars, heavy theatrics and stuff. I’ve tried her stuff and I’m feeling it way down in my dreams and so should you!

An Unsung Mother's Tragedy: Sullivan

Here's one more song to ponder that caught my ear in the late 90's, and it still rings a ding. Its all about a mother's grief and tragic loss of all her sons during world war II a.k.a the Sullivan brothers who were enlisted in the navy.

Really cool song from Caroline Spine to give a thought on the message that "War is not always the answer" and maybe to open up the eyes of everyone to the veterans who paid blood, sweat, and tears for their countries during the world wars.

A Rural- Urban Legend: Warlito "Waway" Toledo- Man or Myth?

"Be sure to lock your doors and keep your windows closed at night, be sure to keep the women and children out of sight, for teenagers it is a whole lot forbidden to take strolls and night-outs especially during the wee hours of the night; as he is on the prowl and looking for the next victim to pounce upon; among his favorites are those that are left home-alone..."

These are but some of the words that can be heard circulating in the Northern City of Danao and the towns:Compostela, Liloan, Consolacion that supposedly sheds the light on the man or myth "Waway", the former victim of foul deed-gone berserk, and is looking for justice on what has happened to his wife; one fateful night while they were resting after laboring for a sugar cane plantation harvest.They were supposedly robbed and attacked by armed men, and in front of Waway's eyes his wife was raped and brutally killed, and he was stabbed and shot several times and was also left for dead. He managed to survive the wounds and the grave ordeal,but has gone berserk and became a serial- killer since then.

Sudden news broke out about 3 months ago, with matching posters and flyers plus the supposed picture of "Waway" being posted 'round Danao, Compostela, and Liloan reminding everyone to be on the lookout for the dangerous criminal and be vigilant to call the authorities at his sighting.

I got the chance to hear news about him, when i overheard my cousin mention that he's going to bed early and watch over his house to safeguard against "Waway". I made him tell the story but to my bewilderment as i thought, that by now the police in my town, should this guy be on the loose; would be scampering checkpoints and night patrols,not to mention that a news "scoop" like this surely will never escape the nose of the media.

I heard some neighbors talk that he supposedly attacked a woman in Danao (raped and then supposedly plucked out one of her breasts thereafter.)Others would say that he has victimized another woman from one of the mountainous barangays in Compostela; and just recently, his sighting on far-away Lapu-Lapu; then the story would be told all over again, with different versions this time!(Another case of the Habal-habal story?)

This guy's popularity coupled with the tale and the posting seems authentic indeed, that it has attracted some attention from the media, and some prominent personalities scoured the town police stations for the authenticity of his story and the corresponding details that go with it, but to no avail; Policemen either don't have him in their records or would just say that he never existed; but a spark did came when a precinct from Danao; i think, commented that they have a record of him on a case back in 2004 and that it was the relatives of "Waway" that allegedly posted pictures of him around the city and the surrounding towns. Where the scare started, I've never known.

Provided that this guy's tale and what he does is true; has everyone on a scare-and a good thing mind you, as the streets became empty of late-night brawls of gangs and hang-outers!

People would say that he's out there on the prowl and that everyone is reminded to be home at night with the men to be always on the lookout for their women and children.

Still the question remains, is he a man or just another myth?...

Writing Exercises: Writing Back Cover Stories

The Assignment:

According to Jim Kochenburger, VP-Townhall Press, a research shows that most people spend less than 15 seconds reading the back cover of a book before deciding to purchase.

The book's back cover is a sales pitch and nothing else – it’s about engaging a potential reader's interest to cross the threshold of the book. You want action. You want to get people to look inside your book—or better yet, to buy it. Your back cover is the last piece of promotional material that hits potential purchasers on their way to pay.

Today’s exercise is an attempt to writing a back cover copy. Select one from the titles and explore. And from the story that plays around on your head, you may come up with a back cover copy. A good goal for cover copy is 150 words, 200 if you must.

The Last Outrage

Mordikai, the country besieged by war is the setting for this awe inspiring sequel to last year’s best seller- Conspiracy at the Trenches.

Kenji, now aided by the heroic band of warriors from the Wolf Clan began the treacherous journey to the Kingdom of Levi to save Reva, the demi-god druid and Kenji’s love interest now held captive by the Cult of Samael on the bowels of Mount Shinja.

On the way, they will battle and make friends with the noble but deadly band of notorious thieves known as the Serpent Clan and will cross paths with the defiant band of Mordikai’s warrior-elite, the Dragon warriors. See how Kenji survives a near fatal blow that will lead him and his warriors at the mercy of Mordikai’s most powerful clan- Lotus.

The country’s tide will turn as Kenji, thru a duel of swords, is able to slay Arachnid- the treacherous Lotus pack master; and will in turn be proclaimed as the clan’s new leader.

Swords and Sorcery will clash once again as Kenji lead the united clans to go and battle the dreaded Berserker and his evil Samaels.

Will Reva be freed and will Mordikai’s peace be restored?...

Here's one cool way to practice discipline in prison! Just imagine the hard work that everybody from the jail guards down to the inmates puts into this activity- and it's daily mind you!

These inmates from the Island of Cebu, Philippines is now in the walk of fame worldwide courtesy of their videos thru You Tube featuring their Algorithm dance moves and more!.

I've got my hat's off to those responsible for this activity, as this is one way to channel the inmates' energy to do creative things instead of minding riots and gangs amidst the weighing, and worsening population amongst our penitentiaries.

hmmm...wished every penitentiary would follow their example someday.
